Dr. Alessandro SPANO

Dr. Spano currently holds a joint appointment with the Faculty of Laws and with the European & International Social & Political Studies (EISPS) Department at University College London (UCL).  Dr Spano is the Academic and Teaching Convenor for the Law Modules in the EISPS Department at where he lectures the courses of EU Law, Law and Governance in Contemporary China, Public International Law and Cyberlaw and Governance of Digital Markets. At the Faculty of Laws, Dr Spano lectures International Trade Law in the LLM Programme and he is a member of the Centre for Commercial Law and of the Centre for Law and Governance in Europe.

 

Dr. Spano conducts research in the areas of Chinese competition law, Chinese investment law and EU-China relations.  Furthermore, since 2012, Dr Spano is also a Fellow at the Asian Institute of International Financial Law at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and his research activities has also been focused on cyberlaw and digital innovation in Europe and China.  In 2019, he was awarded with the UCL Global Engagement Fund for the research project "Fintech and Digital Innovation: perspective and challenges in the area of financial services" in partnership with the School of Law of HKU and, in 2018, with the ECB Legal Research Programme. Since 2007, Dr Spano is also a Research Fellow at the Centre of European Law at King's College London. In September 2016 the EU-China Research Centre, based in the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges hosted him as a Visiting Fellow.

 

In April 2009, he was awarded with the EU-China Science and Technology Fellowship Programme for the research project: “Competition Law and Policy in China: a Sino-European Perspective”. The project was sponsored and funded by the European Commission, King’s College London and the Tsinghua University of Beijing. In this respect, from 2009 to 2012, Dr Spano conducted research in academic institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong in the areas of WTO law and Chinese competition law. From 2009 to 2011, he was nominated as a Research Fellow and Foreign Expert in EU law at the School of Law of the Tsinghua University of Beijing. Dr Alessandro Spano holds a PhD in Chinese law and EU law at King’s College London (KCL), an MA in Advanced European Studies (College of Europe, Natolin) and a degree in law (Paris X Nanterre).
